Here are some clear cut half square triangle instructions. The most commonly used patchwork quilt piece is the half square triangle unit. A half square triangle is a style of simple quilt block. When you first see it, you might be tempted to call it a two-triangle square or a square made up of two triangles. But most quilters know it by it’s funny name, a half-square triangle. It is simple to make in theory, but some quilters find it laborious to fulfill. Even though it seems simple, perfection in all of the steps is really the ticket.

There are several ways to build the block. It is not advisable to make a half square triangle using two triangle shaped pieces, because then you have to deal with bias edges of the individual triangles. The first way is to build it from two different squares. Quilting Blogs

Step 1 is to cut the two squares from various fabrics.

Step 2 is to sew two diagonal lines, 1 half inch apart, centered from one corner to an opposite corner. It is most important to sew these 2 lines exactly one quarter of an inch from both sides of the center diagonal line.

Step 3 is to cut between the two rows of stitching and press each seam allowance to either side.

This may seem well and good in theory, but it is actually hard to do correctly. Human error makes this hard. Problems like stitching with too big or too small a seam, or cutting the fabric in a slapdash fashion. Also, fabric can have a life of its own. It tends to wither up if too much heat from an extremely hot iron is used, thereby making a skewed block.
