In ancient times people believed gods communicated through dreams.  Astrologers and soothsayers performed dream interpretation.  Greek temples were set up to cure people.  Gods were thought to deliver health advice through dreams.  Therefore, it was necessary to have someone on-site, usually a priest, who could help them understand their dreams and god’s plan for them.  Dream interpretation fell to the priests in Egypt.  For example David was a dream interpretor in the bible.  Dream interpretors are even depicted in some hieroglyphics. 

Dream analysis became popular in psychology with the work of Sigmund Freud.  His famous work was a book titled the Interpretation of Dreams.  He held that dreams contained inner wishes and desires.  He also held that dreams were always based on the previous day’s events.  Freud developed the concept of the inner censor as the regulating portion of the mind that communicated through dreams.  This later became known as the super ego.

People resist many things, said Freud.  That means they censor themselves.  People keep careful control over what they do and even what they think.  Strange dream imagery comes from these filters.  For dream interpretation Freud used a guide to standard ways the conscious mind distorted imagery in dreams.  This was used to interpret the images. 

For Freud nightmares weren’t insecure thoughts.  Instead they were the result of the ego being frustrated at not being allowed free reign.  It’s well known that a Freud dream interpretation would often include sexual conclusions.  However, Freud said this was a misapplication of his work.
