To age is inevitable, something we cannot avoid, but is does not mean that we should get diseases, but there are elderly diseases which have become more common in senior and elderly people, which could be due to many reasons, and many of which could be avoided by leading a healthy lifestyle.   Many of the elderly diseases are chronic or progressive in nature which makes these people dependent on their families and the local health services.

Cancer is a disease which is quite common amongst elderly people, and nearly two thirds of all the elderly are afflicted with cancer at some stage in their lives.   There are of course different types of cancers, and some are more common in elderly than others.   Breast cancer and lung cancer are the more prevalent cancers in the elderly.   Lung cancer is often as a result of the habit of smoking over the years.

Diabetes is common amongst the elderly which is mostly due to a bad lifestyle of consuming too much sugar and a fatty diet.  The body does not secrete sufficient amounts of insulin  to keep the blood sugar levels down, and diabetes in the elderly can only be controlled through diet or medication, as it would then be incurable.  A low carbohydrate diet is recommended, with enough (small amounts) of proteins throughout the day.  Sweet drinks and alcohol should be omitted, but one should drink plenty of water and exercise regularly.

Dementia is a common disease amongst the elderly and it occurs when there is degradation of the nerve endings that send impulses to the brain.  There are many types of dementia (approximately 100) and the most common one is Alzheimer`s disease where the nerve cells in the brain get destroyed.  Researchers are trying to discover what causes dementia, which would help in the treatment, but at the moment there is little than can be done to treat the disease.

Parkinson`s Disease also affects the nerve cells that go to the brain and it is still a mystery as to why it occurs.  Parkinson`s disease affects the elderly and is characterised by uncontrollable tremors and shaking and in later stages affects the brain.

Heart disease is also common in the elderly, and as a person ages, the heart undergoes subtle physiological changes, even in the absence of disease.  The muscles of the aged heart may relax less completely between beats and as a result the pumping chambers become stiffer and may work less efficiently, especially if specific cardiac diseases are present.   In old age, the heart also may not pump as vigorously or as effectively as it once did.   The older heart also becomes less responsive to adrenaline and cannot increase the strength or rate of its contractions during exercise to the same extent that it could in youth.

Meals on Wheels is a non profit organisation who do a tremendous job of helping and feeding the elderly to prevent hunger and poverty.
